Highly advanced simulation technologies are essential for achieving smaller dimensions
As electronic equipment and devices get ever more compact and offer higher functionality, power supplies also must get even smaller, lighter, and more efficient. To swiftly meet these demands of the market, TDK-Lambda uses sophisticated evaluation & simulation technology to examine and analyze a multitude of aspects such as thermal flow, magnetic fields, and mechanical design from different angles. Simulation techniques that use visualization on a computer and show thermal convection are highly useful in determining the optimal layout of transformer and semiconductor components parts in the interior of a power supply. This speeds up the development and design of space-saving power supplies delivering excellent performance.

Circuit design minimizing loss is the key to ultra high efficiency
The ideal power supply provides a stable voltage under all conditions, with 100 percent efficiency. However, in conventional power supplies various losses are introduced when alternating current is converted into direct current, and when converting voltage up or down. TDK-Lambda is developing digital control technology and other advanced circuit technology designed to minimize such power supply losses. In addition, various other measures are also being taken, such as the adoption of low-loss semiconductors, as well as low-loss transformers and coils using original TDK materials. The overall aim is a power requirement reduction when the products are integrated in end-user equipment.

A technological challenge: Green power products
Contributing to the conservation of energy by developing high-efficiency products
The power supply is a key device for reducing energy use. If the efficiency of current TDK-Lambda power supplies can be improved by as one percent, a savings of as much as 240 giga watt hours per year can be achieved. This is equivalent to the entire power consumed in one month by Nagaoka City in Niigata Prefecture, where the Nagaoka Technical Center is located. TDK-Lambda is working hard and devoting its resources to achieving this kind of progress, which we see as a contribution to improving the global environment.

Contributing to the conservation of energy by developing compact and lightweight products
TDK-Lambda aims to reduce waste and conserve resources through recycling. The eventual disposal is one of the aspects that we keep in mind when we design our products. Designing for ease of disassembly and disposal, as well as reduced parts count, are some of the ways by which we help reduce the burden. Keeping our products compact and lightweight is therefore beneficial also from this angle. As a case in point, the mounting footprint of the PFE series has been reduced to about half to one third of conventional products.
